✨️MOZAMBIQUE is the next African attire reveal and Head-Carrying Artistry is today’s feature! 🇲🇿

In Mozambique, many women wear the traditional CAPULANA, a versatile cloth known for its vibrant patterns and bold colors. The Capulana is often worn as a wrap skirt, dress, headwrap, or shawl, making it both practical and beautiful for daily life.

I painted these Mozambican women representing the art of carrying loads on their heads, balanced gracefully on top of the Capulana headwrap. I even have the second woman also carrying her baby on her back. That's a very common sight!

Women throughout Africa have this skill for carrying loads, whether it’s baskets of fresh produce, water, or other essentials. It reflects both strength and poise, passed down through generations.

In this case, the Capulana, with its eye-catching patterns, frames this tradition beautifully, making it a recognizable part of Mozambican culture and resilience.

Next time you visit, you might catch a glimpse of this graceful sight, symbolizing both elegance and hard work. 🌍💪🏽

✨️3 things about me you didn't know:

🙈 I was very shy growing up.

I didn't make friends easily, not at first. It didn't come naturally to me. I still feel this way for the first few minutes of meeting new people, but I've learned to overcome the jitters. I try to be bold and take the first step with a friendly smile or just saying hello!

🩺 I wanted to be a child psychologist.

My dad asked me once when I was 8 or 9 what I wanted to be when I grew up. I answered, "A doctor who helps kids by helping them to talk. Like Clara!" We had watched an Italian show called Seulement Par Amour: Clara, and seeing how the main character helped kids, I wanted to do that. Then I found my art passion and later HGTV, so here we are.

📖 I didn't enjoy reading. 🤯

I know... the horror! I struggled with reading and comprehension when I first transitioned from the Congo to a French school in Germany. And then again, when I moved to America. It made me feel like I was 'less than', so I hated it. It took a friend at a school in Virginia, sharing her passion for YA suspense novels to get me hooked! I must have read 20 books by Joan Lowery Nixon my first summer here! (Thanks, Shalu!)

✨️SENEGAL's BOUBOU is today's African Attire feature! 🇸🇳

The BOUBOU is a loose, flowing garment worn by men and women in Senegal, and I think, a beloved favorite for most countries on the continent!

It’s a key part of the country's traditional attire. It can be very ornate made of silk with intricate embroidery (grand boubou), or like this one, can be a soft cotton for more casual wear. The headpiece is called moussor and is also commonly worn worth the boubou.

One of the most recognizable features of the Senegalese boubou is the indigo tie dye fabric, which often comes in indigo and maroon but can be made with several color combinations.

✨️NIGERIA 🇳🇬 Today's attire takes us to the Yoruba people of Nigeria in West Africa.

The Yoruba ethnic group is one of the largest in Nigeria, and their clothing is one of Africa's most elaborate and vibrant traditional attires.

The women wear the Iro (a wrap skirt), the Buba (a top or blouse), and the Gele (the headwrap). The Gele, in particular, is like its own art form! It is carefully and intricately wrapped to add flair and personality. Yoruba attire is often made from or Ankara fabric or rich Aso-Oke fabric, known for its bold patterns and luxurious texture, making it perfect for weddings, festivals, and other celebrations.

✨️👋🏾Hujambo (hello)! Let's go to Kenya!🇰🇪

The MAASAI people are an ethnic community in Kenya. Their attire is one of the most recognizable in all of Africa. They wear what is called shúkà, a vibrant red or red and blue plaid rectangular cloth (blanket) traditionally draped over the body, which they pair with beadwork.

The color is symbolic and represents bravery and strength. The way it is worn also determines the level of the man's maturity. The added beaded necklaces, headpieces, and spears carried by warriors reflect the Maasai’s connection to nature and their centuries-old traditions.

✨️UGANDA 🇺🇬 One of the traditional attires of Uganda is the Gomesi, from the Basoga people (also called Busuuti among the Baganda people).

The Gomesi is a long, floor-length dress with triangular puffed sleeves, raised at the shoulders, and square neckline. It is tied around the waist with an elegant rich silk sash, sometimes made of velvet or cotton.

The fabrics are vibrant and come in a variety of colors, depending on the family and occasion, and are covered in intricate patterns.

🌟African Attires are BACK!

Today's reveal is NAMIBIA's Ohorokova, the traditional dress of the Herero tribe women in Namibia, a southwestern African country.

This outfit is known for its vibrant colors and unique, voluminous shape, inspired by Victorian-era dresses.

It boasts multiple layers of petticoats to give it an A-line shape, long (or mid-length) sleeves, and a cattle-horn-shaped headpiece called Otjikaiva, which is a symbol of prosperity and pride in Herero culture. ✨
